Cows of Switzerland – Part 3

Swiss cows are essential part of Swiss culture and landscape – so important, it is hard to imagine Switzerland without its cows. Did you know more than 700.000 cows live in Switzerland? Here are some of those amazing animals I’ve had a pleasure to meet on my trips around Switzerland accompanied with some interesting facts about them:

Bannalp

  • The most common cow breeds in Switzerland are Simmental cattle, Brown Swiss cattle, Holstein cattle and Eringer cattle.

Winter Wonderland at Mt Rigi

Remember the joy when the first snow covered the earth and you just couldn’t wait to grab your sledges and run sledding to the hill nearby your house? I still remember all the fun and laughter I had while sledding when I was a child. Even though I am now grown up I still immensely enjoy this fun winter activity. Luckily, I live in Switzerland, a country where the winters are still still cold and snowy enough to allow me to practice this sport. Last year I’ve tried the sledding tracks in Grindelwald and a year before the tracks in Engelberg. This year, I went sledding to Rigi – a 1,789 meters high summit in Central Switzerland and it was great! There was enough of fresh snow, sun was out and my husband and I had a lot of fun swishing down the snowy terrain!

Mt. Rigi: Grandma goes to the Mountains

My boyfriend’s parents and grandmother had recently come to visit us in Luzern. For the eighty-something year old grandmother was this trip a special occasion: it was the very first time ever she travelled by plane and the first time she visited Switzerland. We wanted to make her stay even more memorable, so we decided to show her the best of Switzerland: the Swiss Alps.

Cows of Switzerland

When imagining Switzerland, the image of cows decorated with large bells munching grass or lay about on green pastures surrounded by the majestic mountains, comes to your mind. The truth is not much different. During the summer, cows are still to be found at the mountains. Here is collection of cows we’ve had a chance to encounter on our trips around Switzerland. Enjoy it!
