Winter came to Europe early this year. First snow covered the mountains and allowed many non-glacier ski resorts in the Alps to open earlier than usual. My husband and I took advantage of this situation and started our ski season on the first weekend in December. As this was also the weekend of my birthday, we celebrated it while swishing down the perfectly prepared slopes of my favoured ski resort Melchsee-Frutt in Central Switzerland.
Melchsee-Frutt is small ski resort located in the Swiss Alps above the town Kerns in canton Obwalden. Located about a 40 minutes drive from Lucerne is one of the closest ski resort to our home. To me, it is also one of the most beautiful and scenic places in Switzerland. Stretching around the mountain plateau and peaks around it, Melchsee Frutt boasts with spectacular Alpine landscape. With 36 km of piste is not the largest ski resort, but it offers just enough to keep us entertained for a day.
When we woke up in the morning, I wasn’t sure if I really want to leave warm bed and spend the day on snow. A cup of warm coffee later and with my belly full of delicious breakfast prepared by my dear husband, I was ready to hit the slopes.
Skiing conditions were amazing: plenty of snow on and off the pistes, cloudless sky most of the day, cold temperatures and almost no people on the slopes. We didn’t have to wait at any of the lifts. There were so little skiers around, some of the runs were almost intact even in at 1pm in the afternoon. Amazing! I enjoyed the first turns on snow this season immensely.
Few of ski runs were not yet open, but that didn’t really affect us. My favourite slopes were open and we skied them all.
After a day of skiing we returned back home, but that wasn’t the end of the day. My husband had prepared another surprise for my birthday: he took me to newly opened Bürgenstock Resort’s Alpine Spa. But more about that amazing experience in one of the following posts…
